How to request a Ryanair compensation
You can claim compensation after an air disruption by filling out the
online claim form.As set out in EU Regulation 261/2004, the company will proceed with compensation in the following cases:
- Flight delay of more than 3 hours with a compensation ranging from €250 to €600
- Denied boarding due to overbooking with a refund from 250€ to 600€.
- Cancelled flight notified with less than 14 days with compensation ranging from €250 to €600
First of all it is good to take note of the main information, such as departure airport, arrival airport and flight number (usually recognisable by the initials FR).
Once you have collected this information, you can fill in the form by attaching your identity document front and back and a copy of your boarding pass.
With these two simple steps, you can immediately find out whether you are entitled to compensation.
Remember that in the event of a flight delay, cancelled flight or overbooking, you are entitled to a maximum of €600
Difference between compensation and refund
It is good to recognise the difference between refund and compensation.
The term Ryanair refund refers to the refund of the amount spent by the passenger for the purchase of the ticket. The term compensation means the amount to be paid to the passenger in respect of a damage caused.
The ticket refund is due to the passenger whenever Ryanair fails to guarantee the service purchased.
In fact, if a passenger buys a ticket to reach a certain airport, it is the company's duty to guarantee this service. If for any reason the passenger cannot reach the indicated airport, a refund will be due.
Ryanair compensation, or indemnity, is due to the passenger if Ryanair causes an inefficiency. When purchasing the ticket, the airline provides a service connecting two airports. Obviously, if the travel schedule is not respected and the airline is responsible, it will have to compensate its passenger for the damage caused.
The amount of the Ryanair refund will be equal to the purchase price of the ticket, while the compensation changes depending on the length of the route:
- 250€ for flights less than 1500 km
- 400€ for flights more than 1500 km
- 600€ for flights longer than 3500 km
In conclusion, the reimbursement is due under all circumstances, except if the passenger decides not to use the purchased ticket. Compensation is only due in certain circumstances, let us see which ones.
When are you entitled a Ryanair compensation
Compensation is due if the airline causes a problem in the flight, such as flight delay, cancelled flight or overbooking.
Specifically, the cases are as follows:
- Delay of more than three hours
- Cancellation notified with less than 14 days' notice
- Overbooking
The amount of compensation, however, is only paid if the airline is responsible for the problem.
In the case of technical problems and operational issues, Ryanair will have to pay the amount stipulated in the Charter of Passenger Rights.
Compensation is not due if the inefficiency is not the responsibility of the company.
Ryanair is not liable in case of:
- Adverse weather conditions
- Bird strikes
- Air traffic restrictions
- Strike by air traffic controllers or similar.
Similarly, we can exempt the company from compensation if the delay is less than three hours or the cancellation is notified with more than 14 days.
Although the prerequisites for claiming compensation do not exist, it is possible to obtain a ticket refund if you are unable to reach your desired destination.
When you can claim reimbursement or compensation
In order to claim Ryanair compensation or refund, it is necessary for the flight to be delayed by more than three hours, cancelled with less than 14 days' notice or denied boarding.
Once disrupted, the passenger can claim compensation within a maximum of six years.
The European regulation 261/2004, protects passengers up to a maximum of six years, from the moment Ryanair's office is located in Ireland.
After this period of time, it will no longer be possible to claim compensation.
Opening a claim is very simple and in just 2 minutes you will know the outcome of your case.
In case of a positive outcome, the company reserves a maximum period of 90 days to ensure that there are no flaws in the claim. In the case of a successful confirmation of processability, it will issue the credit to the current account within the next 90 days.
Therefore, an average time frame of 180 days is considered to receive your Ryanair refund or compensation.
What you need to submit a Ryanair compensation claim
In order to claim a Ryanair compensation, it is necessary to understand whether the case falls within those described above.
In the event of a delay flight more than 3 hours, cancellation notified with less than 14 days' notice and overbooking, each passenger is entitled to receive his or her own amount, as follows:
- 250€ for routes of less than 1500 km
- 400€ for routes of more than 1500 km
- 600€ for routes of more than 3500 km
Two documents are essential to open your claim: your identity card and boarding pass.
In case of overbooking, Ryanair will issue a certificate notifying the denied boarding.
This document is essential in order to request your refund.
